Leona H Myers

August 17, 1930 ~ December 15, 2020 (age 90)

Leona H. Myers, 90, of Maple Valley, WA, passed away peacefully a little after daybreak December 15, 2020, while in St. Anthony's Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her husband Ted L. Myers by her side.  Leona was born August 17, 1930, in Greeley, Colorado, to Carl E. and Nelly Alfrida Johnson, both immigrants from Sweden.  She, along with her brother and three sisters, grew up living the farm life in Weld County, Colorado, near Greeley.  She attended multiple schools around Greeley, since they lived on various farms, and ultimately graduated valedictorian from Galeton High School in 1948.  She wrote a memoir of this time, entitled “Memories of My Childhood” and later gifted a copy to the City of Greeley Museums.

In 1951 she earned her B.A. degree in education from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley and began her 40-year teaching career in Carlsbad, NM teaching 2nd grade at the Airfield School from 1951-1955. During the summers she returned to Greeley to pursue an M.A. in education, which she obtained in 1955.  Her teaching career continued in Jefferson County, Colorado (1956-1960), and ended in Chesterton, Indiana (1961-1991) where she spent most of her years teaching 1st & 2nd grades at Thomas and Bailly Elementary Schools.  Leona especially liked working with children who had difficulty learning to read.

On February 14, 1955, she married Ted Myers in Carlsbad, NM.  After Ted's graduation from the Colorado School of Mines in 1960, they moved to Chesterton, IN.  Upon retiring in 1991, they returned to the Greeley area.  Following her life-changing stroke in 1999, Leona and Ted eventually moved to Maple Valley, WA in 2004 to be near their daughter & son-in-law.

Although during her life Leona attended several different churches representing different denominations, her core faith in the saving grace provided by God through His Son Jesus Christ guided her throughout.  Her hobbies included needlework, reading, gardening, stained glass, and picture and crossword puzzles.

Survivors are her husband, Ted Myers; a son, Terry Myers of Eagar, AZ; a daughter, Kathy Myers (husband, Jeff Mergenthal) also of Maple Valley, WA; two sisters, Margaret Moore and Doris Peterson of Windsor, CO and Eaton, CO, respectively; and many nieces and nephews.  Her parents, brother Gerald Johnson (Lillian) and sister, Genevieve Magnuson (Albin), predeceased her.
